On dates and standing. Certification and membership terms are reproduced exactly as printed, expiry dates included, and any term that has ended is labelled as such. The ISO 9001:2008 certificate is against a revision superseded by ISO 9001:2015 and stands as evidence of a long-running quality programme rather than a certification in force. Material test reports are different in kind: they certify the samples tested on the date tested, carry no expiry, and remain valid evidence of material performance.
Anyone can print a certificate. What gives one meaning is the chain of independent assessment behind it — and that chain is what makes a certificate issued in Dhaka acceptable to a buyer in Frankfurt.
ISO publishes the standard — ISO 9001 for quality management — but certifies no one itself. The standard defines what an organisation's systems must demonstrably do.
UKAS in the United Kingdom, ANAB in the United States, CNAS in China, Inmetro in Brazil. Each is assessed against ISO/IEC 17011 and is a signatory to the international mutual-recognition arrangement, which is what carries a certificate across borders.
The accredited certifier — assessed itself against ISO/IEC 17021-1 — audits the company on site, then issues a certificate for a three-year term with annual surveillance audits in between.
Break any link — an unaccredited certifier, or an accreditation body outside the arrangement — and the certificate carries no international standing. Accredited management-system certificates can be verified publicly on IAF CertSearch by company name or certificate number.
